A typical fully automatic potato chip packaging machine typically includes the following core steps:
1. Bag Forming
Roll Material Loading: The machine feeds a roll of composite packaging film (typically made from multiple layers of materials such as PET/AL/PE, which provides moisture, oxidation, and light protection).
Former: The film is pulled out and passed through a special conical device (former), transforming it from a flat roll into a cylindrical shape.
Longitudinal Sealing: The longitudinal edges of the film are heated and securely sealed, forming a back seal.
2. Measuring and Filling
This is the most critical step in ensuring profitability and consumer protection. Potato chips have a low density, are bulky, and are fragile, placing high demands on the metering system.
Gravimetric: The most common and accurate method. A weighing hopper is located beneath a conveyor belt, into which the chips fall. A high-precision sensor measures their weight in real time. Once the target weight is reached, the discharge gate closes, and the door beneath the hopper opens, allowing the chips to be poured through a discharge tube into pre-formed bags.
Volumetric: This method estimates weight by measuring a fixed volume. This method offers lower accuracy and is less commonly used for high-value products with unstable density, such as potato chips.
3. Horizontal Sealing & Cutting
Horizontal Sealing: After the chips are filled, the packaging film is moved downward a full bag length. A pair of heat-sealing jaws move between the upper and lower filling positions to clamp the film.
Gas Inflation: During heat sealing, food-grade nitrogen (N₂) is injected into the bag. Nitrogen is an inert gas that displaces oxygen, preventing the chips from oxidizing, spoiling, and becoming rancid. It also allows the bag to puff up, giving it a fuller appearance and better protection. This is known as "nitrogen-filled packaging."
Cutting: While the heat-sealing jaws seal the top and bottom of the bag, the blades in the middle separate the two bags. The top seal forms the top seal of the current bag, while the bottom seal forms the bottom seal of the next bag.
4. Finished Product Output
The cut bags are transported via a conveyor belt for subsequent operations such as coding (printing the production date and batch number) and boxing.
